Microsoft confirms Windows 11 pre-installed software +1: only 230KB of “Edit” text editor

Microsoft has confirmed that a new text editor, called “Edit”, will soon be released with Windows 11.

The editor is a command-line tool designed to provide users with a lightweight and full-featured text editing solution, and unlike existing apps like Notepad and OneNote, “Edit” focuses on simple text editing without too many complicated features.

Microsoft says “Edit” will be released with Windows 11 as the default command-line text editor, but it won’t replace the existing Notepad.

“Edit” is currently only 230KB in size, but it has the basic functionality of most text editors, allowing users to launch “Edit” directly from the command line and edit the file in PowerShell or the command prompt.

It supports mouse and keyboard operations, and offers useful features such as Find and Replace, which is especially useful for working with large files.

Edit also has additional features such as a document picker, which lists all open files in a single session, allowing users to quickly switch between files, as well as word wrap and Go to line.
