In the context of the unified product strategy, Google announced that it will completely end support for the remaining legacy features of Google Duo in September 2025. This means that Duo, a video calling app, will officially bid farewell to users after 9 years. If you still have your call history or message content, it is important to back up your data as soon as possible to avoid losing access to it at that time.
Since its launch in 2016, Google Duo has quickly gained popularity in the mass market with its clean and crisp user interface and interactive features such as graffiti, AR masks, visual effects, and more. However, with the increasing demand for remote work and online communication around the world, Google opened Google Meet to all users in 2020, and continued to add advanced features such as virtual backgrounds, real-time captions, and noise reduction to gradually replace the role of Duo.
Since 2022, Google has launched the integration of Duo and Meet. While the two have nominally become one, some features have been reserved for the short term to balance the experience of original Duo users. The official offline announcement means that this “transition mode” will be completely ended.
Google stresses that all Duo-related historical data will no longer be supported, and recommends that users complete the backup work before September to avoid data loss or service interruption.
