IT Home News on May 30, Microsoft Corporation released a blog post today (May 30), announcing that Microsoft Teams Free officially took over Skype, becoming a new home for user communication and collaboration, and expanding and launching many new features.
Microsoft announced in February 2025 that Skype, a communications tool that has been with users around the world for more than 20 years, will end operations on May 5, 2025, following which millions of former Skype users will migrate to Teams Free.
Microsoft says that when users sign in to Teams Free, they can see the full retention of Skype chat history, contacts and call history, as well as seamless integration with Skype balance and subscription services.

Microsoft highlights that the new Teams Free is designed to make it easier for users to connect and multitask without having to switch apps frequently.

For example, users can make calls directly through Teams Free on the web without having to download software. The in-app “Meet” feature allows you to create a meeting link, join a call, or schedule a meeting in advance; Click “Meet Now” in the chat to start an instant video call.
In addition, Teams Free supports one-on-one or group chats, built-in emoji reactions and GIFs, easy file and photo sharing, and the ability to create shared community spaces. Users can also customize notification sounds, express themselves with video filters, and manage privacy settings to stay safe.
