  • Google’s new research: Quantum computers of less than a million bits can crack the RSA encryption algorithm in less than 7 days, which is 20 times easier than 6 years ago.

Silent revolutions often unfold quietly behind the glass door of the laboratory. However, Google’s latest research shows that the impact of the quantum computing revolution has begun to oscillate outward – which may shake the foundation of Internet security.

On May 21, Google Quantum AI published on arXiv that “How to factor 2048 bit RSA integers with less than a m The paper entitled “illion noisy qubits” (how to use less than 1 million noisy qubits to decompose 2048-bit RSA integers). Research shows that a quantum computer with less than 1 million noise-containing qubits can crack the 2048-bit RSA encryption key (the current mainstream standard of network data security) in less than a week. This value is only 1/20 of the author’s own prediction of about 20 million qubits in 2019. !

This study was completed by Craig Gidney, a Google quantum research scientist, and may redefine the technical threshold needed to threaten the world’s most widely used public key password system.

This study may prompt experts to re-evaluate: 1) the urgency of quantum cryptons after deployment; 2) the practical feasibility of implementing such attacks on the currently proposed hardware. More broadly, the study also shows that although factors such as the number of quantum bits, gate fidelity and error rate are very important, through algorithm innovation and software and hardware collaborative optimization, quantum computing can also achieve milestone breakthroughs such as quantum advantages!

  • Google glasses are back, the nirvana of the AI era is reborn

In 2014, I put on Google Glass for the first time at the site of GDG Devfest China.

It was considered the world’s first smart glasses. At that time, it was just a “prototype product” purely for developers. It can record video, support voice interaction, and support the “mirror” of some applications through Mirror API to the LCD silicon-coated LED screen with less than an inch and a wide field of view.

Unfortunately, Google Glass is extremely short-lived, with only 2 years from its introduction to discontinuation. But through it, I think I see the future.

Over the past decade, Snapchat, Oculus/Meta and Rayban have made waves in the market of smart glasses/head wearable products. However, it seems that there is nothing wrong with Google on this track.

I have also played many follow-up products, and even became a heavy user. But from time to time, I always think of Google Glass.

On today’s Google I/O, the company has rekindled the flame of smart glasses and head wearable products.

Google officially released the latest generation of Android XR products and technology lines: Project Aura, the first lightweight smart glasses product jointly launched with Xreal.

After reading the I/O 2025 main speech, I opened Google Photos and looked back at me wearing these products, from youth to maturity.

With the advancement of display and interaction technology, Android XR has finally picked up the baton that Google Glass threw on the ground ten years ago. Gemini’s complete innovation of all Google products has given Android XR the “magic bonus” of AI.

On the way, Google glasses are back. But this is not Yesterday once more, but the beginning of a new era.

The first Android platform in the Gemini era

To be honest, Android, as a smartphone operating system, is not enough to attract any interest. Even Google itself did not set aside time for its own keynote speech at I/O 2025.

But the status of Android XR is completely different. According to Google’s wording, it is the first Android platform built in the Gemini era.

Obviously, mobile phones have become a thing of the past, and head-mounted smart devices will create a new interactive experience and become the new growth engine of Android.

This time, Google did not produce its own glasses, but chose to work with excellent technical partners.

Project Aura is the first lightweight smart glasses for the Android XR platform, co-launched by Google and Xreal, a Chinese mixed reality technology company.

At present, there are very few parameter details. Through renderings and I/O 2025 live demo, it can be seen that this lightweight smart glasses:

There are at least two cameras on the left and right, and other visual sensor modules in the middle, for taking photos, videos, and more importantly – supporting Gemini’s visual/agent intelligence capabilities (Google Project Astra)

There are two-channel stereo speakers and an array of multiple microphones for calls, recording, and supporting Gemini’s voice interaction capabilities.

Single-screen display embedded in the lens (waveguide or other implementation methods unknown)

This is a product that is still in the testing stage, but Google still bravely made some demos of supported functions on the spot – mainly reflecting Gemini’s intelligent body capabilities as a core selling point.

For example, real-time translation/simon: the two speakers on the scene used Hindi and Persian to translate each other. Although the signal of one of them did not look very good, the translation effect was still amazing.

The translation is plain text, but we can conclude from the earlier Gemini part of the speech that Gemini must have the ability to output audio directly. Gemini’s own natural language interaction supports 45 languages in more than 150 countries, but the voice translation capability as of mid-May 25 only supports English-Spanish translation, but dozens of languages will be added in the coming weeks.

This gives Android XR glasses a powerful usage scenario. Whether it is cross-language work or traveling abroad, this translation/transmission ability makes more natural interpersonal interaction possible.

Break the language barrier and provide you with real-world subtitles and even dubbing – this is what Android XR and Gemini want to do.

Other effects of Android XR glasses were also demonstrated on the spot. For example, users (especially visually impaired users) can directly ask Gemini what they see, search and answer by pressing keys or voice wake-up.

This is actually the visual search ability of Google Lens, which Google has been doing nearly 10 years ago. But with Gemini’s AI plus, the ability will be more powerful.

    The female speaker on the scene greeted a colleague in the background, and then woke up Gemini after a few minutes and asked her to make an appointment for coffee with the person she had just met;

She also asked Gemini if she remembered which shop the coffee she had just held in her hand was from, and which coffee shop she made an appointment with.

Gemini quickly completed the previous record retriever and set the calendar items.

——This shows that Android XR smart glasses can not only accurately remember who users have just seen, but also understand multi-modal contexts such as visual-voice, so as to accurately understand the needs of users.

Behind these capabilities is the new generation of multi-modal destal models such as Gemini 2.5 Pro upgraded by Google at this I/O 2025, and the project Astra intelligent assistant technology.

Gemini 2.5 Pro and Project Astra drive the real-time visual AI intelligent assistant function of Gemini Live, and today is officially launched for Android and iOS Gemini app. It is online and provided to all users for free.

On Android mobile phones and Android XR glasses platforms, Gemini Live has been upgraded to a full-intelligent body with full device control ability, which can be based on the current visual environment context and the user’s natural voice control. Complete multi-step and complex tasks.

Google smart glasses, reborn in the fire

At that time, Google Glass challenged people’s privacy awareness and social habits, and was not favored by the market, so it can also be said that it was dead.

Today, when everyone can’t wait to have a camera on their foreheads, smart glasses are no longer the focus of controversy. Perhaps when everyone has smart glasses, privacy has given way to new functions and revolutionary experiences.

Of course, Google still remembers all the disputes about privacy, so it also said that it will continue to collect feedback from users and testers during the product development process, so as to ensure that the product violates privacy less and provides more help.

Google Glass may be dead, but Google has not stopped researching smart glasses. Today, all the efforts of more than ten years have finally been reborn through Android XR Nirvana.

A good pair of glasses should not be just a technical product. The successful experience of Meta and Rayban with 2 million pairs of sales has taught Google a good lesson.

At the I/O conference, Google also announced that it would cooperate with two well-known eyewear brands and retailers, Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, to launch Android XR glasses that are both fashionable and technological.

As the latest fashion brand under the Vision Road Group, Gentle Monster is very popular among young people in Asia and Europe and the United States, and its products can often be sold at prices that far exceed their materials, workmanship and design standards. After entering the Android XR project, I’m afraid the premium of Gentle Monster will only become more exaggerated.

Warby Parker is an O2O concept glasses brand that has become popular in the United States in recent years. Users can use its app or website to conveniently order multiple frames at once, and then return unnecessary and unsightly products after trial.

There is no doubt that if smart glasses want to expand their sales channels, it is the minimum to play the role of “fashion items”. Considering that the two major brands, Rayban and Oakley, have been compiled by Meta, Gentle Monster and Warby Parker may be the best choices left.

Finally, the only regret is that considering Gemini’s overseas big model identity – even if Android XR can be adopted by Chinese device brands, it may be difficult for Chinese users to feel the perfect combination of hardware and models.

Fortunately, at this I/O conference, Google has given a good look to manufacturers through Android XR. The speed of refinement and productization of large models in China is faster than that of overseas.

Perhaps we can also expect that this wave of smart glasses will completely break out.

  • Support for Win10 is coming soon. Microsoft: Hurry up to Win11 or buy a new computer!

Kuai Technology reported on May 6 that while updating the latest status of Windows 11, Microsoft also updated the latest status of Windows 10, reminding users that Windows 10 will officially end support on October 14, 2025.

Microsoft said that from that date, devices running Windows 10 will no longer receive fixes for known problems, time zone updates, technical support, and monthly security and preview updates with the latest security threat protection.

At the same time, Microsoft also provides users with several countermeasures. First, it can check whether the current Windows 10 device is eligible to upgrade to Windows 11. Devices that meet the upgrade conditions can install the latest version of Windows 11 24H2.

For devices that are not eligible for upgrade, Microsoft recommends that users buy a new Windows 11 computer. Microsoft also recently emphasized the great advantages of Copilot+ AI computers over old Windows 10 devices.

For users whose devices are not eligible for Windows 11 upgrade, Microsoft also provides another option: purchase extended security updates (ESU).

This is the first time that Microsoft has launched the ESU option for individual users. Previously, ESU was mainly aimed at enterprise users. ESU will provide users with additional security support to ensure that the device can still run safely after the end of support for Windows 10.

  • Google I/o2025 Points: Chrome Big Update! Deep integration of Gemini Live

At the Google I/O 2025 conference on Tuesday, Google launched a new feature called “Gemini-in-Chrome”, officially introducing Gemini Live to PC and Mac, naturally with Chrome browser. According to the news announced by Google on that day, the function will be pushed to some beta users on May 21, and the official push time has not been announced.

According to the previous release rhythm, users should soon be able to see this function in the official version of Chrome.

To be fair, in the current tense situation of the AI war, Google does not have the advantage, and even lags behind. Although Google tried to reverse the decline by quickly iterating Gemini, it had little effect. In the international market, although ChatGPT maintains its advantage, domestic AI such as DeepSeek also shows no weakness. On the contrary, Google Gemini has almost no bright spots.

Fortunately, Google still has Chrome. In the browser market, Chrome is still far ahead. Of course, Google does not want users to open Chrome just to use ChatGPT or DeepSeek, which are business AI models, so the integration of Gemini is naturally imperative.

    Picture

After the integration of Gemini into Chrome, users can quickly open a small window in the upper right corner of Chrome browser to use Gemini or Gemini Live, or select the shortcut key (Alt+G&Ctrl+G) to turn on the function.

It is worth mentioning that Gemini Live’s natural voice dialogue is more convenient than typing, and it can also be more efficient in presentations. On the other hand, the reputation of Gemini Live is much better than that of the traditional Gemini. At the same time, because it is officially produced by Google and has rich API integration, it is reasonable to believe that users can completely rely on voice to control the browser in the future.

    Picture

In the actual demonstration, users only need to “tell” Chrome what content needs to be opened, such as comparing two products on the shopping platform, and opening two tabs to compare content, etc. The speed and efficiency of actually opening web pages, the efficiency of natural language seems to be far superior to the traditional mode of UI click and input. At least it can be confirmed that Gemini’s permissions in Chrome browser are very high, and routine operations such as controlling tabs are completely out of the question.

    Picture

As Chinese users, we must be more concerned about whether browsers using the Chrome kernel can also integrate domestic AI models such as DeepSeek. Of course, the permission opening of API is the top priority. If Google is willing, a large number of plug-ins will appear in the future. Combined with the localized AI model, the experience of browsing the web will be subverted.

    Picture

The vice president of Google also said, “We hope to turn some tasks that can be completed in 30 minutes into a one-click journey.” There have been a lot of big cakes drawn by Google in the past two years. We will wait and see how Gemini-in-Chrome performs.

  • Again, Google has updated the G word mark for the first time in ten years

Google’s first update of the G word mark in ten years is holding back the big move again. Google’s first update of the G word mark in ten years is launched: Logo Intelligence Agency On May 12, in the update of the Google App iOS version to version 368.0, the application icon quietly ushered in a small revision.

The new version of the icon still uses the iconic four-color capital “G” design, but introduces a subtle gradual blur in the color transition, making the original four-color boundary more blurred, showing a softer and more flexible gradient effect. Google App new and old icons Google, change the label Google, change the label In the settings of Google App, users can find the “Alternate Application Icon” option. This feature was launched by Google in July 2024, and supports users to customize and switch different icon styles. The spare icons are divided into two versions: light and dark, two of which “G” are designed in color, and the other two are presented in monochrome. In this update, these four spare icons are also replaced with the latest gradual change color version at the same time, which is consistent with the main icon style. The four-color icon setting interface in Google App Google, change the label Google, change the label It is worth noting that since Google completed the rebranding in 2015, this classic four-color G-word icon has not been changed. Although the change is subtle, it still attracted extensive attention from the design circle and ordinary users. Overall, young users and design enthusiasts welcomed its modernity and visual softness, while some users criticized its ambiguity and lack of recognition. The gradual change of the color G icon Google on a dark background, changing the label Google, changing the label From the current situation, Google has not yet adjusted its core brand logo “Google” alphabet logo. As for whether other product icons (such as Gmail, Drive, Photos, etc.) will be updated simultaneously, there is no clear signal yet. Google and Google Gemini application icons Google, change the label Google, change the label But from the change of the iOS version of the application icon, it can be found that Google is gradually moving closer to the visual language used by Google Gemini and its AI-related interfaces. This trend may indicate that Google is incorporating artificial intelligence elements into the brand perception design, moving towards building a more unified and futuristic visual system. Google iOS, Android and web version screenshots Google, change the label Google, change the label As of press time, only the iOS version of Google and the Android version of Google 16.18.37 beta version has enabled this new icon, and the web side has not yet appeared relevant changes. According to Google’s usual operating mode, if you decide to change to a gradual change color icon, such as Chrome or Google Maps, which also use Google’s four brand colors, it is also likely to introduce a similar gradient effect to maintain consistency with this “G” icon update. On September 1, 2015, Google launched its largest rebranding since its founding, with the launch of a new wordmark in sans-serif fonts. Like the original wordmark, the “e” in the wordmark is also tilted to remind people that Google is always an unconventional company. The rebranding is believed to be influenced by the trend of technology companies to simplify their logos, aiming to make them more recognizable on the growing number of electronic devices that use their services. Evolution of Google Wordmark Google, Google, Google, Change Label In terms of applications, Google has launched apps on iOS since 2008. The design of its app icons has always been dominated by white characters on a blue background. After rebranding in 2015, the app icons became the current four-color G pattern. iOS version of Google App icon changes Google, change the label Google, change the label Interestingly, on the web, Google’s icon style is another form. For example, between 2009 and 2012, Google released a new website icon on the website. It contains a left-aligned white letter “g”. The background area is mainly red, green, blue, and yellow. The top, bottom, and left edges of the letter “g” are slightly cropped. Google’s web icons change Google, change the label Google, change the label As for why, ten years later, Google decided to blur the color boundaries in the logo, the Google I/O 2025 developer conference that opened on May 20 may tell us the answer.

  • The number of subscribers to the Google One subscription service is growing rapidly

According to Reuters, Google’s parent company Alphabet revealed that its Google One subscription service recently surpassed 150 million users. The service, which offers cloud storage and artificial intelligence capabilities, has seen a 50% increase in subscribers since February 2024.

    Image

It is reported that Google has launched a $19.99 monthly package plan that allows users to use artificial intelligence features that are not available to free users. The company continues to offer file storage services at a lower price for the Google One subscription tier, but does not include most of the AI features.

Shimrit Ben-Yair, Google’s vice president of subscription services, said the newly launched AI package had brought in “millions” of subscriptions. It is also worth mentioning that Google One is part of Alphabet’s diversification to get rid of its over-reliance on advertising. Advertising accounts for more than three-quarters of the $350 billion in total revenue in 2024.

With OpenAI’s ChatGPT and AI chatbots such as Google’s own Gemini threatening the dominance of Google’s search engine, Alphabet’s success in the subscription business could play a key role in its long-term financial prospects.

An Apple executive said in court testimony last week that searches on Apple’s Safari browser had slipped for the first time due to the advent of artificial intelligence services. The iPhone maker is looking to roll out an AI-powered search option, which is a blow to Alphabet. Unlike search engines, though, AI interfaces have yet to find a way to seamlessly embed ads. As a result, many companies turn to charging users through subscriptions or on a per-product basis.

In February, when asked on an earnings call how to monetize Gemini, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said, “As you can see on YouTube, we’re going to give users a variety of options over time.” For this year, I think we’re going to focus on the subscription direction. ”

  • Google Chrome protects users from scams

Google announced a new generation of AI-based defenses on Thursday to help combat scams on Chrome. The tech giant will start using Gemini Nano, its device-side large language model, on desktop to defend users against online scams. Google is also introducing a new AI-based warning mechanism on Chrome for Android to help users identify spam notifications and increase user awareness.

According to Google, Safe Browsing Enhanced Protection Mode in Chrome offers the highest level of protection, with twice the protection against phishing and other cyber threats compared to Standard Protection Mode. Today, Google is using the Gemini Nano to add an extra layer of protection against online scams for users who enable Enhanced Protection Mode.

According to Google, this on-device approach provides real-time insight into risky websites to protect users from scams, including new types of scams that have not been encountered before.

“Gemini Nano’s large language model is a great fit for this because it distills the diverse and complex nature of a website, helping us respond more quickly to new types of scams,” Google notes in the blog. ”

Currently, the company has leveraged this AI-based defense mechanism to protect users from remote tech support scams. Google plans to extend this protection to Android devices and more types of scams in the future.

Regarding the new AI-based warning mechanism, Google notes that the risk posed by scam sites is not limited to the website itself, but can also spread through notifications if you enable them. Malicious websites can use notifications to commit scams, which is why Chrome will now help you identify those that are malicious, spam, or misleading on your Android device.

You’ll get a warning when Chrome’s on-device machine learning model flags a notification as potentially scamming. You can choose to unsubscribe from the notification, or view blocked content. If you think the warning is incorrect, you can also choose to allow the site to send all notifications in the future.

In today’s announcement, Google also revealed that it has used AI to detect and block hundreds of millions of fraudulent results in search, stopping scams every day. Google says its AI-based scam detection system has helped block 20 times more scam pages than before.

For example, Google noticed that bad actors were pretending to be airline agents to trick users who asked for help. According to the company, this type of scam has been reduced by more than 80 percent, reducing the risk of users encountering fraudulent phone numbers in their searches.

  • The new feature of Google Maps scans iPhone screenshots to save forgotten places, but the privacy concerns are concerning

Google Maps has launched a new feature that scans users’ screenshots to identify locations and add them to a private list. The feature is designed to help users find frequently taken screenshots more quickly. According to Google’s blog, the feature has been launched in the iOS app and was announced as early as a month ago. Instead of using location data or image recognition, it uses Google’s in-house Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) technology to scan text in screenshots for names of places mentioned. This is a limited but initial attempt at a more powerful version. In the “You” tab of the Google Maps app, users can find new private lists. As soon as you update to the latest version, users will see a private list labeled “Screenshots”, as well as tutorials for using the feature. This “Screenshots” folder will display the latest screenshots containing the names of the locations. Users can click the “Review” button to see the locations detected by Google. If it is confirmed that it is correct, you can choose to save, otherwise you can choose not to save. The app will display the saved locations on the map. In addition, users can also authorize Google to automatically scan all screenshots to detect locations, or add images manually. However, considering Google’s controversy over user privacy, the idea of allowing companies to scan my screenshot library and record location information is very disturbing to me. This kind of location data may be sent to Google’s servers, processed, sold, and used to build user profiles, which is at the heart of Google’s business model. In addition to privacy concerns, I’m also wondering how much utility such a feature brings. On iOS, users can long-press any text to look up online, including addresses and place names, which means that information on screenshot locations can already be easily and quickly obtained without relying on Google Maps updates. Still, this doesn’t prevent other users from possibly finding this new feature useful. If you want to try it out, make sure to download the latest version of Google Maps on the iOS, which will also be updated to Android devices in the future.
