The Win11 WSA project has ended, and the Microsoft Store has removed the app

The once-high-profile Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) project has now come to an end. According to Windows Latest, the deadline for WSA is set for March 5, 2025, and it is currently completely nowhere to be found in the Microsoft Store. This is not surprising, as Microsoft announced that it would be shutting down WSA a year ago.

There was an update to the WSA in March of this year, but that update was only a security fix and didn’t cover any new features. This makes sense, given that there is no need for Microsoft to roll out new features as the project nears its end. In fact, WSA never really reached all users during its lifetime, and Microsoft ultimately decided that it was not a wise move to emulate running Android apps on Windows 11.
At the same time, Microsoft removed the Amazon Appstore from the Microsoft Store, which was supposed to be the on-ramp to install WSA and get apps that were optimized for the Windows 11 simulation environment. However, the list of apps hasn’t really grown as Microsoft promised, and WSA has never been as popular as BlueStacks. Even at the outcry of Windows users, Microsoft did not restart the WSA project.

According to IT House, WSA’s lack of support for the Google Play Store has severely limited its development potential. Subsequently, Google announced the launch of Google Play Games for Windows, further seizing WSA’s market share in the gaming space.
