EU digital law issues first fine: Apple and Meta fined a total of 700 million euros

On April 23rd local time, the European Commission announced that EU regulators have imposed a fine of 500 million euros on Apple Inc. and a fine of 200 million euros on Meta for violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

The European Commission has demanded that Apple lift technical and commercial restrictions on developers, and that Apple does not allow developers to bypass its app store for sales outside of its platform marketplace.
Meta’s business model of providing “ad free services” on Instagram and Facebook also violates DMA.
Apple said in an email statement, “We will appeal the fine imposed by the European Commission, which is another example of the Commission’s unfair targeting of Apple. These decisions are detrimental to user privacy and security

According to data, the EU’s Digital Market Law came into effect in March 2024. This is one of the anti-monopoly measures issued by the EU against technology giants, which will clarify the responsibilities of digital service providers, curb malicious competition behavior on large online platforms, and ensure that consumers have more choices.
According to the bill, business entities with a market value of 75 billion euros or an annual turnover of over 7.5 billion euros, and with at least 45 million monthly active users in the EU and 10000 business users annually, can be recognized as “gatekeepers”, Alphabet、 Amazon, Apple, ByteDance Meta、 Microsoft and other companies have been recognized by the European Union as “gatekeepers”.
